Popular evangelist J.John has a unique way of describing just about everything. Of marriage, he says, “In the swimming pool of marriage, there is no shallow end. You’re in the deep end from the moment you start.”

Many couples get married believing that the early days of marriage will be easy. In reality, they can be some of the most difficult and important days of your marriage. Once the wedding and honeymoon are over, life settles into a daily routine. Careers are chased. Children are born. There’s always a pile of laundry and bills to contend with. It’s inevitable that romance will fade.

The question is, what do you do about it?

J.John and his wife, Killy, are joining me on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly to discuss how they’ve stayed happily married for 42 years despite the pressures of world travel, months apart from each other, and raising a family.

They say marriage is ultimately about three things:

• Adjusting.

• Rearranging.

• Compromising.

You also need persistence. The Johns encourage married couples to “stick with it” even when things get tough. And it will get tough. Left unchecked, adversity will overpower your relationship.  One minute you’ve got a mild case of the yawns, the next you’re living separate lives. Before long, you’re thinking your best years of marriage are behind you.
