Understanding the inner thoughts of others can be a challenge, especially when it comes to individuals with autism. As a parent of an autistic son named Nat, I have always been curious about what goes on in his mind. Nat is a quiet individual who prefers to communicate in his own unique way, using a combination of sounds, head tilts, and hand gestures. While he struggles with English speech, I have always longed to hear his thoughts and desires.

Despite Nat’s quiet nature, I have made it a priority to ensure that he stays engaged and active. From participating in Special Olympics events to baking intricate cakes together, my husband and I have worked tirelessly to provide Nat with opportunities for growth and enjoyment. However, as much as we try to keep him busy, I am still left wondering about his inner world.

One thing that stands out about Nat is his fascination with schedules and time. He finds comfort in knowing when events will occur and in what order. His calendars are like a lifeline for him, providing a sense of security and predictability. Even as a young child, Nat demonstrated an understanding of concepts like days of the week, showcasing his unique way of processing information.

As Nat now resides in a group home, my desire for updates on his well-being has only grown stronger. I find myself constantly checking social media feeds for glimpses of him engaging in various activities. Recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see him attending a dance with his caregiver, Cathy, despite it not being on the group home’s calendar. It was a heartwarming moment that highlighted the strong connections in Nat’s life and the advocacy of those around him.

What truly amazed me was the revelation that Nat himself had initiated his attendance at the dance. By reading someone else’s schedule and expressing his desire to participate, Nat had effectively advocated for himself. This newfound ability to communicate his needs and preferences is a significant step forward for him, showcasing his growth and potential.

Witnessing Nat take charge of his own experiences filled me with joy and hope for the future. It was a reminder that when given the opportunity, individuals with autism can make their voices heard and influence their surroundings in meaningful ways. As a parent, seeing Nat assert himself in this manner was a moment of pure delight and pride.

Overall, Nat’s journey towards self-advocacy serves as a beacon of hope for all individuals with autism and their families. It is a testament to the power of listening, understanding, and supporting individuals in their quest for independence and fulfillment. And for me, it was a moment that made me feel like dancing with joy.
