Hydration becoming key functional beverage trend

In today’s consumer shopping landscape, functionality continues to be a key trend. Many people are seeking out foods and beverages that are packed with protein and fiber for strength and satisfaction. And now, there’s a new focus emerging: hydration.

Recent data from PepsiCo reveals that while 95% of Americans recognize the importance of staying hydrated, more than 150 million individuals experience mild to moderate dehydration symptoms on a regular basis. These symptoms can include fluctuating body temperature, reduced cognitive focus, and increased thirst.

Public health officials support PepsiCo’s stance, linking poor hydration habits to issues like fatigue, decreased cognitive performance, and kidney problems – especially in older adults.

While hydration-focused beverages like Gatorade and Pedialyte have been around for a while, there’s a growing understanding of the role electrolytes play in overall hydration support. These beverages have traditionally been associated with sports and health, but the perception is changing.

Damian Browne, senior vice president of research and development at PepsiCo, highlights a common misconception about hydration: it’s not just for elite athletes or extreme situations. Mild to moderate dehydration can sneak up on most people throughout the day, often without them realizing it. Thirst isn’t always a reliable indicator of hydration levels.

As interest in functional beverages that support hydration grows, manufacturers are introducing products formulated with electrolytes. These essential minerals help stabilize pH levels and maintain water balance in the body for optimal hydration.

However, adding electrolytes to beverages can alter their taste profile. Citrus flavors are often used to complement the mineral content and create a more enjoyable drinking experience.

Several brands are capitalizing on the hydration trend by launching new electrolyte-infused beverages. Q Mixers, Syncron, The Kraft Heinz Co., and Tropicana Brands Group are just a few examples of companies expanding their product lines to include hydration-focused options.

In addition to electrolytes, manufacturers are exploring the combination of these minerals with other functional ingredients to enhance wellness benefits. Sonic Drive-In, Campbell’s Co., Systm Foods, and Beyond Meat are all incorporating electrolytes into their beverage formulas alongside caffeine, protein, and other nutrients.

Moreover, some companies are introducing powdered drink mixes that consumers can add to their beverages for added functionality. True Citrus and Sprinter are among the brands offering these convenient options for on-the-go hydration support.

The growing popularity of GLP-1 medications, which can impact appetite and fluid intake, is driving the demand for hydration-focused products. As a result, electrolyte formulations are becoming more prevalent in the beverage industry.

Looking ahead, industry experts predict that hydration support will become a standard feature in many beverages, not just those targeted at athletes. As the market continues to evolve, consumers can expect a wider range of products that prioritize hydration and overall wellness.
