Amazon-Owned Zoox to Offer Robotaxis on Uber App in Las Vegas
Zoox, a company owned by Amazon, has announced its plans to make its robotaxi services available for hailing through the Uber app in Las Vegas later this year. This collaboration between the two companies aims to revolutionize the way people commute in urban areas.
Regulatory Approval Needed for Zoox’s Robotaxis
Before Zoox can launch its robotaxi service commercially, it needs approval from the federal government to operate vehicles without steering wheels or pedals. This requires exemptions from the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently considering Zoox’s application for these exemptions, which would allow the company to deploy its robotaxis for commercial use.
Zoox’s Expansion Plans and Strategic Partnership with Uber
Once Zoox receives approval, it intends to launch its own commercial robotaxi service before integrating its vehicles into the Uber app in Las Vegas. The company is already offering free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco, as well as expanding its presence in eight other U.S. cities such as Dallas and Phoenix. Zoox and Uber have announced a multi-year strategic partnership that includes plans to expand their services to Los Angeles by 2027.
Uber’s History of Autonomous Vehicle Partnerships
While this partnership marks Zoox’s first collaboration with a platform like Uber, Uber has established partnerships with over 25 autonomous vehicle companies worldwide. Uber’s partnerships include agreements with Waymo, Baidu, Volkswagen, May Mobility, and Pony AI. The ride-hail giant has been actively developing new offerings for its robotaxi partners, such as the creation of an “AV Labs” division focused on collecting real-world driving data.
NHTSA’s Stance on Autonomous Vehicle Regulations
During a recent autonomous vehicle safety hearing, NHTSA chief Jonathan Morrison emphasized the importance of establishing a clear regulatory framework for self-driving cars. He expressed the need to move beyond speculation and hype to create robust oversight for the autonomous vehicle sector. NHTSA is working diligently to address regulatory challenges and facilitate innovation in the industry.
