Discovering Our True Selves

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of who we truly are. We get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, forgetting to take the time to connect with ourselves on a deeper level. However, it’s essential to remember that the wisdom and compassion we seek are already within us.

Meditation is a powerful tool that can help us unlock our inner potential and get in touch with our true selves. By practicing techniques like shamatha-vipashyana, also known as tranquility-insight meditation, we can learn to quiet our minds and connect with our breath.

During shamatha-vipashyana meditation, we sit in a comfortable position, with our eyes open and hands resting on our thighs. We focus on our breath, allowing ourselves to be fully present in the moment. This practice requires both precision and relaxation, as we learn to be aware of our breath while remaining open to whatever thoughts or sensations may arise.

As we practice being present with our breath, we also learn to observe our thoughts without judgment. Whether our thoughts are positive or negative, violent or peaceful, we simply label them as "thinking" and return our focus to the breath. This process helps us become more aware of our thought patterns and develop compassion for ourselves.

It’s important to approach this practice with gentleness and kindness, avoiding harsh self-criticism. By embracing our thoughts with honesty and humor, we can begin to unravel the patterns that keep us stuck and closed off. Through this process of self-discovery, we not only learn more about ourselves but also gain insight into the shared human experience.

In the words of the renowned author Pema Chödrön, "Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves." By taking the time to know ourselves deeply and embrace all aspects of our being, we can cultivate a sense of compassion that extends to those around us. So, let us start where we are and embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing through meditation.
