The realm of identity security is undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to the advancements in Generative AI technology. This evolution is reshaping the landscape of both opportunities and threats, as security professionals and cyber adversaries engage in a fierce battle to outsmart each other in the ongoing gen AI arms race. Techniques like voice phishing (vishing) and deepfakes are on the rise, with triple-digit growth rates being reported in the latest security research.

According to CrowdStrike’s 2025 Threat Hunting report, vishing attacks have surged by a staggering 442% from the first half to the second half of 2024, indicating a significant shift in the tactics employed by cybercriminals. These adversaries are harnessing the power of AI-driven social engineering and deepfake tools to circumvent Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and exploit credentials at scale. The report also highlights that a majority of exploited vulnerabilities are related to initial access, often through compromised identities, with the use of generative AI playing a pivotal role in driving these trends.

The proliferation of machine identities now outnumbers human users by a ratio of 45:1 in the average enterprise, while attackers can move laterally within just 51 seconds. Traditional identity and access management systems, which rely on static rules and periodic reviews, are struggling to keep pace with threats that operate at machine speed.

In 2024, the transformation in the identity security landscape accelerated significantly as generative AI capabilities transitioned from experimental phases to full-scale implementation. Gartner predicts that global information security spending is projected to reach $213 billion in 2025, with a subsequent increase to $323 billion by 2029. This growth underscores the shift towards AI-powered platforms that can learn, adapt, and respond autonomously, replacing legacy rule-based systems.

The future of identity security looks promising, with IDC forecasting a doubling of the Identity and Access Management (IAM) market from $23.5 billion in 2024 to $47.1 billion by 2028. As organizations seek to enhance their security posture, Gartner suggests that IAM strategies should prioritize optimal outcomes by addressing user constituencies systematically and managing access through an integrated fabric of tools, rather than focusing narrowly on specific user groups or tools.

The current landscape of identity security is characterized by a paradigm shift towards proactive, real-time security resilience, driven by generative AI advancements. Traditional approaches to identity governance and vulnerability assessment are being replaced by AI-driven solutions that can adapt to rapidly evolving cyber threats. Leading vendors in the space, such as CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Tenable, SailPoint, CyberArk, Okta, and others, are leveraging generative AI to enhance identity security and threat detection capabilities.

These advancements in generative AI technology are not just theoretical; they are delivering tangible results in key areas that CISOs need to prioritize. Data from enterprise deployments indicates that gen AI can significantly reduce investigation times, minimize excessive privileges, expedite mean-time-to-detect (MTTD), and decrease false positives. These measurable improvements are transforming identity governance and threat management into strategic advantages that organizations need to capitalize on.

In conclusion, the integration of generative AI technology is revolutionizing the field of identity security, enabling organizations to stay ahead of cyber threats and protect their digital assets effectively. By embracing AI-driven solutions and leveraging the capabilities of leading vendors in the space, businesses can enhance their security posture and mitigate the risks associated with evolving cyber threats.
