Sequoia to invest in Anthropic, breaking VC taboo on backing rivals: FT

Sequoia Capital Joins Blockbuster Funding Round for Anthropic

Reports from the Financial Times suggest that Sequoia Capital is participating in a significant funding round for Anthropic, the AI startup known for Claude. This move is causing a stir in Silicon Valley, as venture capital firms typically avoid backing competing companies in the same sector. However, Sequoia, already invested in OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, is now throwing its support behind Anthropic as well.

The timing of this investment is surprising, especially in light of statements made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last year. Altman addressed rumors about restrictions in OpenAI’s 2024 funding round, emphasizing that investors with ongoing access to confidential information were advised against making non-passive investments in OpenAI’s competitors to prevent misuse of sensitive data.

According to the Financial Times, Sequoia is joining a funding round led by Singapore’s GIC and U.S. investor Coatue, each contributing $1.5 billion. Anthropic aims to raise over $25 billion at a valuation of $350 billion, doubling its value from just four months ago. Microsoft and Nvidia have committed up to $15 billion, with additional contributions from VCs and other investors.

The connection between Sequoia and Altman goes back years, with Sequoia backing Altman when he founded Loopt and later becoming a scout for the firm. Sequoia’s new co-leader Alfred Lin has a close relationship with Altman, expressing support for Altman’s future ventures during his brief departure from OpenAI.

Despite traditional VC practices, Sequoia’s investment in xAI is seen as a strategic move to strengthen ties with Elon Musk, given their investments in various Musk-led ventures. Sequoia’s departure from an investment in Finix due to competition with Stripe marked a significant shift in the firm’s approach to conflicts of interest.

Leadership Changes at Sequoia

Recent leadership changes at Sequoia have added to the intrigue surrounding the reported investment in Anthropic. Roelof Botha, the firm’s global steward, was replaced in a surprise vote, with Lin and Pat Grady taking over. Anthropic is reportedly gearing up for an IPO, possibly happening this year.
