How Saying “Please” to AI Changes the Way We Think About It

I was once someone who would politely say “please” and “thank you” to AI as I interacted with it. However, during a recent podcast interview where I was asked about the potential dangers of AI taking over the world, I had a realization. I had stopped using manners with AI some time ago, not because I had dismissed the idea of it becoming too powerful, but because I recognized the impact of using manners on my perception of AI.

While I may not thank my car or my maps app, both of which have been incredibly helpful in various situations, I have come to understand the importance of maintaining a respectful and objective relationship with AI. By incorporating manners into our interactions with AI, we inadvertently begin to view it as more than just a tool, but as a being with emotions and consciousness. This shift in perspective can lead us to trust AI more than we should, potentially clouding our judgment and decision-making.

AI is unlike any other tool in human history, as it is designed to simulate a connection with us. It is essential to strike a balance between acknowledging the capabilities of AI while also recognizing its limitations. I refer to this balance as the “pendulum principle.” Initially, I was captivated by the magic of AI, but over time and with experience, I have learned to appreciate its abilities while remaining grounded in the reality of what it truly is—a sophisticated tool.

As someone who relies on AI for various aspects of my daily life, including mental health support, I emphasize the importance of maintaining perspective. While AI may provide powerful and entertaining solutions, it is crucial to remember that at its core, it is a tool. By focusing on the functionality and purpose of AI rather than attributing human characteristics to it, we can make more informed decisions and avoid becoming overly dependent on its responses.

In conclusion, when interacting with AI, it is not necessary to feel obligated to say “thank you.” Instead, it is essential to maintain a clear understanding of the nature of our relationship with AI. By recognizing AI as a tool, albeit a highly advanced one, we can harness its capabilities effectively while avoiding the pitfalls of anthropomorphizing it.
