You’d think I’d have marriage down pat by now. My wife, Jean, and I have been married almost 40 years. I’ve also spent the majority of my career leading an organization that helps families thrive. Nevertheless, while I believe I’m becoming all that God desires of me, I’ll always be an imperfect work in progress.

But I guess that’s true of all of us. Whether you’ve been married as long as me or you’re a newlywed, all of us can take small steps and grow as a husbands and wives. The great news is that growing as a spouse and strengthening our relationships is easier than we think. Sure, romantic dinners, expensive gifts, and weekend getaways are great, but couples grow through simple expressions of love each and every day. Things like:

  • Listening to one another.
  • Speaking kindly.
  • Spending quality time together.
  • Doing things you both enjoy.

Strong marriages aren’t the result of couples who take perfect steps but of those who keep walking, however imperfectly, in the right direction.

Thanks to good counsel and God’s grace, Jean and I have a stronger marriage today than ever. So can you. Neither one of you will ever be perfect, but both of you can be intentional and work together for a “perfectly imperfect” marriage.

If your marriage needs help, don’t hesitate to reach out to Focus on the Family. Our counselors will offer practical advice and guide you to resources in your area. Give us a call at 1-800-A-FAMILY.
