Sony has recently introduced the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, along with a new feature called the ‘AI Camera Assistant’. This feature is powered by Xperia Intelligence and utilizes AI technology to analyze subjects and weather conditions in order to suggest the best camera settings, including color tones, lens selection, and bokeh effects.
The concept of the AI Camera Assistant sounds promising, right? However, Sony’s decision to promote this feature on social media platforms has not received the best reactions. The company’s post on X included three images showcasing the original photo taken by the phone and the image provided by the AI Camera Assistant. Many users, including myself, found that the original images looked superior to those enhanced by the AI.
The AI Camera Assistant images appeared overly bright, lacking in color and contrast, among other issues. It is unclear why Sony chose to market this feature in this manner, as many users have expressed their preference for the original images.
Sony is not the only company to face criticism for AI-enhanced images. Google’s ‘Smart Enhance’ tool has also been scrutinized for producing overly sharp and bright images that may not necessarily be an improvement. While opinions on these enhancements may vary, it is evident that there is a need for balance in AI image processing.
It is essential for companies like Sony to consider consumer feedback and reevaluate their approach to AI image enhancement. By listening to user preferences and making necessary adjustments, they can ensure that their products meet the expectations of their target audience.
