Exploring the Rise of Protein-Filled Pasta in the U.S.

With an increasing focus on health-conscious food choices, pasta manufacturers are responding to consumer demand by introducing more protein-packed products. Leading international pasta brands are making their mark in the United States market with innovative offerings.

Pasta Garofalo’s High-Protein Pasta

One such brand, Pasta Garofalo from Gragnano, Italy, has been a family-owned pasta company since 1789, offering over 100 pasta shapes. In November 2025, Pasta Garofalo launched high-protein spaghetti and penne rigate in the U.S. market. These protein-rich pasta varieties are made using advanced milling techniques with durum wheat sourced from Italian suppliers. Each 3.5-oz serving of Pasta Garofalo’s protein pasta contains 19 grams of protein, a lower glycemic index, and 50% more fiber than traditional whole wheat pasta. Moreover, the pasta is naturally low in gluten, aids digestion, promotes satiety, and is free from eggs, nuts, dairy, and common allergens.

Brand manager Anita Menna emphasized, “Our goal was to offer a high-protein pasta made simply from premium durum wheat semolina, cutting through the clutter of pasta substitutes and health fads. This line not only provides the nutritional benefits consumers are seeking but also stays true to our Italian heritage of quality and taste.”

Barilla Group’s Protein+ Pasta Expansion

Barilla Group, based in Parma, Italy, has also expanded its Protein+ pasta line with the introduction of rigatoni and star-shaped pasta since last summer. These new shapes, along with existing varieties, contain 17 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber per 3.5-oz serving, surpassing the protein content of traditional spaghetti.

International Flavors with Samyang Foods

Samyang Foods, a South Korean company, introduced its Tangle instant noodle products to U.S. grocery stores in June 2025. Each Tangle instant pasta bowl offers 15 grams of protein and 4 to 7 grams of fiber per serving, with a quick 5-minute preparation time. The four Tangle varieties available in the U.S. include garlic oil, creamy mushrooms, chunky tomato, and bulgogi alfredo, offering unique flavors and textures.

North American Innovations in Protein Pasta

While Italian and Korean companies are making waves in the protein pasta segment, North American brands are also contributing to the trend. Boulder-based Hero Bread expanded its product range to include pasta, unveiling low-carb, high-protein penne and macaroni options in summer 2025. These pasta varieties are rich in protein, fiber, and low in carbs and sugar, catering to health-conscious consumers.

Canadian nutrition company Cizzle Brands introduced HappiEats Sport Pasta in November, featuring a blend of red lentil, white quinoa, and white bean flour. This handmade pasta offers 18 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber per serving, making it a nutrient-dense alternative to traditional pasta varieties.

The surge of interest in protein-enriched pasta from international and North American brands reflects the evolving preferences of consumers seeking healthier food options without compromising on taste and quality.
