The latest trend in social media content is the short-form video format, also known as vertical videos. Platforms like TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram have seen a surge in viewership due to this type of content. Recognizing this trend, Google has updated its AI video generation tool, Veo 3.1, with a new feature that can transform portrait images into vertical AI videos without the need for cropping.

Google announced in a blog post on The Keyword that Veo 3.1’s “Ingredients to Video” feature now supports a native 9:16 aspect ratio. This means that users can input a few images into Veo and the tool will create dynamic vertical videos that preserve the composition and details of the original images.

One of the key improvements in this update is the ability to generate full-screen portrait videos by default. This eliminates the need to manually crop or resize videos to fit social media platforms’ portrait canvas. Google states that this update also enhances the natural movement, storytelling, and scene flow of the generated videos, even with shorter prompts.

In addition to these enhancements, Google has focused on maintaining identity consistency in the generated videos. Characters remain recognizable across scenes, even as locations change, and backgrounds, objects, and textures are retained throughout the video clips, ensuring a cohesive visual narrative.

Beyond the changes to video formats, Veo 3.1 now offers upscaling options up to 1080p and 4K resolution. The improved 1080p output is geared towards editing workflows, while the 4K upscaling caters to professionals who prioritize texture and clarity in their videos.

These upgrades are being rolled out across Google’s ecosystem, with Veo 3.1 available in the Gemini app, YouTube Shorts, and YouTube Create for consumers, and in Flow, Google Vids, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI for professional and enterprise users.

In a move towards greater transparency, all AI-generated videos created with Veo will now feature SynthID watermarks. Users can use Gemini to verify whether a video utilized Google’s AI tools, enhancing transparency in content creation.

Google’s commitment to vertical AI videos with Veo 3.1’s new feature showcases the company’s dedication to staying at the forefront of video content creation. This update opens up new possibilities for creators to generate engaging and visually appealing vertical videos for social media platforms.
