Embrace the peace and promise of Advent

The holiday season leading up to Christmas is a time that can evoke a range of emotions in all of us. Some find it to be a time of joy and busyness, while others may experience feelings of loneliness and struggle. However, despite our individual experiences, the underlying message of this special time remains the same for everyone: a message of hope as we anticipate the arrival of Christ. Here are some practical ways you can embrace the peace and promise of Advent.

Give yourself the gift of being present

As the holiday hustle and bustle intensifies, it’s important to take a moment to give yourself the gift of presence this Advent season.

Being present is the ultimate gift you can give yourself – it means slowing down, taking a break, and truly being in touch with your emotions. It’s about connecting with your heart and listening to what it has to say.

For many years, I avoided facing my emotions by indulging in food and alcohol, especially during this time of heightened emotions where we often seek comfort in excess.

I also kept myself constantly busy, whether it was through work, exercise, or worrying about things beyond my control, as a way to escape from my feelings.

However, I’ve come to realize that the only way to heal is to acknowledge and feel my pain, which can only happen if I allow myself the space to let those emotions surface.

This Advent, consider setting aside time each day to connect with your feelings. This could involve moments of reflection in the morning and evening, journaling, meditation, prayer, or simply listening to your inner self. It’s about creating a safe space to explore and acknowledge your emotions.

Embrace the idea of saying no to overwhelming social commitments and giving yourself permission to rest and recharge when needed. Remember, you are enough just as you are.

Commit to being present in the moment every day, perhaps by starting your day with a moment of mindfulness as you open your Advent calendar.

Embrace love in all its forms

During the weeks leading up to Christmas, it’s easy to focus on the love we lack or have lost, especially if we’ve been single for a while or have experienced heartbreak.

Instead of dwelling on what we don’t have, I encourage you to lean into love this Advent season, starting with self-love.

Be kind to yourself, practice self-compassion, and be mindful of the words you use when speaking to yourself. Building a foundation of self-love is crucial before opening yourself up to receiving and giving love to others.

Look around and acknowledge the love that already exists in your life – whether it’s from friends, family, coworkers, or pets. Open your heart to receiving love and be willing to give love to others in return.

Hold onto hope and gratitude

The essence of Advent is rooted in hope – the belief that better things are on the horizon. Light will shine through darkness, healing will come, love will fill our hearts, and peace will calm our fears.

Practice hope and gratitude each day this Advent season by starting and ending your days with a list of things you are grateful for. Gratitude helps us stay present, focus on the good in our lives, and remain expectant of positive things to come.

By cultivating a spirit of gratitude, embracing love in all its forms, and being present in the moment, we can prepare our hearts for the blessings that lie ahead.
