Google Health Connect is set to receive a new native step tracking feature, catching up to iOS which has had this capability for some time. This update will allow users to track their steps using their phone’s sensors within the app itself. Previously, Health Connect only served as a platform for aggregating data from other health and fitness services, lacking the ability to track data independently. Google’s move to introduce step tracking to the app marks a significant enhancement to its functionality.

The latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 release confirms Google’s implementation of native step tracking in Health Connect. According to a blog post by the company, the app will now automatically track users’ steps. Apps that have been granted the “READ_STEPS” permission will be able to access this step data from the “android” package.

Reports from Android Authority reveal that users will be greeted with a banner and notification upon opening Health Connect in the QPR2 Beta 2 release, indicating the new step tracking feature. By tapping the “Review” button in the banner, users can navigate to a new “Devices” page within the app. This page displays all connected devices, with the option to view device information and confirm permissions for writing step data.

Google’s decision to add native step tracking to Health Connect comes at a crucial time, as the app has lagged behind competitors like Apple Health in terms of features and data synchronization. With the inclusion of step counting, a basic yet essential feature for health tracking, Google is making strides towards improving the app’s overall user experience. This update signals a positive direction for Health Connect, positioning it as a more competitive option in the realm of health and fitness apps.
