Could Binge-Watching TV Be Good For You? Here’s What the Science Says

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get lost in the world of binge-watching TV shows or playing video games for hours on end. While many may view this as a mindless activity, recent studies suggest that these extended viewing or gaming sessions can actually have a positive impact on your stress levels.

A study published in Acta Psychologica found that individuals who engage in binge-watching TV shows or immerse themselves in lengthy gaming sessions are more likely to experience what researchers call “retrospective imaginative involvement” (RII). This phenomenon involves thinking about and mentally exploring a story long after it has ended. By drawing vivid story elements from memory, individuals can create richer mental models that can provide comfort and perspective in times of stress.

However, it’s important to note that simply watching TV or playing video games is not enough to reap the benefits of this activity. To truly experience the positive impact on stress levels, individuals must be mentally engaged in the content they are consuming. This means putting away distractions like phones and other devices while watching shows or playing games.

In addition to binge-watching TV shows, playing video games can also be a beneficial way to reduce stress. A study published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology found that playing video games, such as the game A Plague Tale: Requiem, can help lower stress levels. In the study, participants who played through both violent and non-violent parts of the game experienced a decrease in stress indicators, including heart rate, self-reported tension, and cortisol levels.

So, the next time you find yourself engrossed in a TV show or video game, remember that it may be doing more for your stress levels than you realize. By allowing yourself to mentally immerse in the content, you can create a rich mental escape that can provide comfort and relaxation in times of stress.
