The Sphere in Las Vegas to Screen Enhanced Classic Movie “The Wizard of Oz”
Exciting news for movie enthusiasts in Las Vegas as the massive venue known as Sphere will be showcasing the timeless classic film, “The Wizard of Oz,” starting on August 28. This screening will not be your typical movie experience, as detailed in a segment on CBS Sunday Morning.
CEO of Sphere Entertainment, James Dolan, revealed that a dedicated team of 2,000 individuals is working on creating a completely new and immersive experience for viewers. Utilizing cutting-edge AI technology, the resolution of the original film is being enhanced, and the footage is being expanded beyond its original frame.
Renowned Turner Classic Movie presenter Ben Mankiewicz explained how AI is being used to transform the film, stating, “A grainy close-up of Dorothy is transformed into a richly detailed image, and through a process known as outpainting, we are able to see additional elements such as the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the majestic mountains of Oz.”
Moreover, this innovative approach involves creating new performances from the existing actors by expanding the frame of the film. Despite these enhancements, Dolan emphasized that the goal is not to alter the original film but to transport viewers into the world of “The Wizard of Oz” as if they were present during the filming.
