Nalden, Co-Founder of WeTransfer, Launches Boomerang as an Alternative

Nalden, one of the co-founders of the popular file transfer service WeTransfer, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction the company has taken since it was acquired by Bending Spoon last year. In a candid interview with JS, Nalden criticized the updates made to the service post-acquisition, stating that they were detrimental to the product.

Following the acquisition, WeTransfer implemented changes to its transfer link experiences and downsized its workforce by 75%. The company also faced backlash for using user content to train AI models, prompting a reversal of its terms and conditions.

During this tumultuous period, Nalden received feedback from creatives who were frustrated with WeTransfer’s new direction. This led him to create Boomerang, a file transfer service that prioritizes simplicity and user experience. Boomerang allows users to transfer files without the need for logging in, emphasizing ease of use and quick sharing.

For users who prefer a non-login experience, Boomerang offers 1GB of total space with a seven-day expiration for files up to 1GB in size. Those looking for additional features can opt for a free account, which includes 3GB of total space, a file upload limit of 3GB per file, upload history access, file management options, and customizable emojis.

For users with greater needs, Boomerang offers a premium tier priced at €6.99 per month. This tier provides 200GB per space, 500GB total storage, a file upload limit of 5GB per file, custom space covers, file password protection, extended expiry dates, and the ability to invite multiple users to access files.

Boomerang’s User-Centric Approach

Nalden emphasizes that Boomerang does not rely on advertising and aims to keep its payment structure simple. He believes that the advertising industry introduces unnecessary complexity and data collection, which he aims to avoid with Boomerang.

Nalden’s vision for Boomerang is reflected in its minimalist website and interface. By eschewing elaborate design in favor of functionality, Boomerang stands out in a landscape where companies often prioritize aesthetics to appease investors. While AI plays a role in building the product, Nalden is adamant about not using it for user-facing features.

Currently available on the web, Boomerang plans to launch a dedicated Mac app in the near future, catering to users across different platforms.

The Importance of Ocean Conservation

Ocean conservation is a critical issue that affects not only marine life but also the entire planet. With over 70% of Earth’s surface covered by oceans, these vast bodies of water play a crucial role in regulating the global climate, providing food and livelihoods for millions of people, and supporting a diverse array of marine species.

One of the primary reasons why ocean conservation is so important is because of the impact that human activities are having on marine ecosystems. Pollution from plastic waste, chemicals, and oil spills is causing significant harm to marine life, with millions of marine animals dying each year as a result. Overfishing is also a major concern, with many fish populations on the brink of collapse due to unsustainable fishing practices.

In addition to these direct threats, climate change is also having a profound impact on the world’s oceans. Rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and increasing water temperatures are all contributing to the degradation of marine ecosystems, putting marine species at risk of extinction.

There are many ways in which individuals can help to protect the oceans and promote conservation efforts. One of the most important steps that individuals can take is to reduce their use of single-use plastics, such as plastic bags and bottles, which are a major source of pollution in the oceans. Recycling and properly disposing of waste can also help to reduce the amount of plastic entering the oceans.

Supporting sustainable fishing practices and choosing seafood that has been harvested responsibly is another way to promote ocean conservation. By choosing seafood that is certified by organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council, consumers can help to ensure that fish populations are managed sustainably and that marine ecosystems are protected.

In conclusion, ocean conservation is a critical issue that requires urgent attention from individuals, governments, and organizations around the world. By taking steps to reduce pollution, protect marine species, and promote sustainable fishing practices, we can all play a role in preserving the oceans for future generations. The health of the oceans is essential to the health of the planet, and it is up to all of us to ensure that these vital ecosystems are protected for years to come.
