The Impact of Your Diet on Nutritional Stress
In today’s fast-paced world, stress is a common factor that many of us struggle with. With so many distractions and demands vying for our attention, it’s no wonder that we often feel on edge and overwhelmed. While meditation is often touted as a powerful tool for finding inner peace and quieting the mind, many people find it difficult to achieve that deep meditative state. What they may not realize is that the food they eat plays a significant role in their ability to reach a state of deep meditation. When certain nutrients are lacking or when the body is under what can be described as nutritional stress, it can be challenging to transcend the physical body and connect with a deeper sense of self.
The adage "you are what you eat" holds more truth than many of us realize. While we may understand the basics of good and bad foods, we often overlook the deeper connection between what we eat and how it affects our bodies. We have become disconnected from the natural world and the origins of our food, leading to mindless eating habits that lack intention and awareness. Unlike other species in the natural world, we have lost touch with our innate ability to instinctively know what is best for our bodies. This disconnect highlights just how spiritually disconnected we have become as a society.
To truly understand the impact of nutrition on our ability to meditate deeply, we must first look at the inner workings of the brain and nervous system, which serve as our interface with the outside world. The brain is a complex organ, but for the purposes of spirituality and consciousness, we can focus on three key parts that influence how we live and perceive the world around us.
The Neocortex
The Neocortex is the part of the brain where enlightenment becomes possible. It is the area that allows for creativity, learning, and experiencing interconnectedness. This part of the brain is essential for experiencing unconditional love and connecting with the beauty of the world around us. When the Neocortex is nourished with the right nutrients, we can discover our true selves and our place in the universe. However, in our modern society fueled by processed and chemically-laden foods, reaching the Neocortex can be a challenge, leading us to operate from more primal parts of the brain.
The Reptilian Brain
The Reptilian Brain, also known as the Hind Brain, is the most primal component of our brain. It is focused on survival and regulates essential functions such as breathing and heart rate. When we are overly controlled by the Reptilian Brain, we may find ourselves living in a state of mindlessness and self-absorption, avoiding change and clinging to past experiences for a sense of safety.
The Limbic Brain
The Limbic Brain is where instinct and emotion converge. This part of the brain analyzes environmental signals and triggers our fundamental programs of fear, feeding, fighting, and fornicating. Processed grains and sugar can stimulate the Limbic Brain, leading to habitual behaviors and emotional patterns.
To bridge the gap between the limbic brain and the neocortex and experience deep meditative states, we must adopt eating practices with reverence and mindfulness. Our ancestors viewed food as a sacred offering to the body, appreciating its role in building and nourishing the temple that is the human body. By nourishing the Neocortex with essential nutrients and avoiding stressors that inhibit its function, we can transcend lower states of awareness and tap into our spiritual potential.
In conclusion, the food we eat plays a crucial role in our spiritual practice and overall well-being. By prioritizing nutrient-dense foods, avoiding processed and chemically-laden products, and embracing a diet rich in natural fats, we can support our nervous system and Neocortex for optimal health and spiritual growth. It’s time to reevaluate our relationship with food and recognize the profound impact it has on our ability to experience enlightenment and transcendental states of consciousness.
