How does a pygmy hippo celebrate her birthday? With a watermelon treat and party decorations, of course.
Hannah Shirley, the world’s oldest pygmy hippopotamus in managed care, recently marked a significant milestone by celebrating her birthday at the San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center. Rescued from a private backyard in Escondido, California in 2002, Hannah surpassed the previous record of 51 years, 6 months, and 2 days on May 25, 2025, making her a true testament to the longevity of her species.
Born on Nov. 22, 1973, Hannah is identified as animal #365 in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Regional Studbook, which monitors all pygmy hippos under managed care worldwide, as stated by the San Diego Humane Society.
