In a move to address the challenges faced by the global chocolate production industry, candy giant Mars has turned to gene-editing CRISPR technology to enhance the cocoa plant. By partnering with Pairwise, a company specializing in using CRISPR to modify the DNA of various plants, Mars aims to identify genetic traits that can help cocoa crops become more resilient to diseases and better adapt to changing climate conditions.

The cocoa industry has been grappling with a shortage of supply, leading to a significant increase in costs and subsequently higher chocolate prices. Hershey, for example, recently announced a double-digit price hike, citing the soaring cost of cocoa. To mitigate the impact of these challenges, chocolate companies like Hershey are exploring alternatives such as incorporating trendy ingredients like peanut butter and wafer in their products.

The rise in commodity costs has also affected other chocolate manufacturers, including Swiss chocolatier Lindt, which has also raised its prices significantly. The CEO of Lindt, Adalbert Lechner, expressed concerns over the continued impact of plant diseases on cocoa farms in West Africa, the epicenter of cocoa production.

Despite the challenges faced by the industry, Mars is optimistic about the future of cocoa production. By leveraging Pairwise’s innovative gene-editing technology, Mars aims to revolutionize farming practices in cocoa production and ensure a stable supply of this vital commodity. Pairwise’s Fulcrum platform offers a range of tools that enable companies to utilize CRISPR gene-editing for the rapid development of new crops, surpassing traditional breeding methods.

Carl Jones, the plant sciences director at Mars, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging CRISPR technology to enhance crop resilience in the face of climate change, diseases, and resource limitations. Mars believes that investing in gene-editing research will not only benefit its supply chain but also contribute to the sustainability of cocoa farming globally.

In addition to Mars, other food industry giants like Hershey, Mondelēz, and Nestlé have also made significant investments in improving cocoa production and supporting sustainable farming practices. These companies are exploring various avenues, including alternative production methods like lab-grown cocoa, to address the challenges facing the cocoa industry.

In conclusion, Mars’s adoption of gene-editing technology represents a significant step towards ensuring the sustainability and resilience of cocoa production in the face of evolving challenges. By embracing innovation and investing in research, Mars and other industry players are paving the way for a more sustainable and secure future for chocolate lovers worldwide.
