The Magic of Freezer-Batched Cocktails

A couple of years back, my friend Alex and I discovered the convenience of batching cocktails and storing them in the freezer. While this might sound like a sophisticated endeavor, in reality, it was a mix of basic math (“one ounce? no, let’s make it one cup!”) and a touch of laziness (or should I say preparedness?). The idea of having pre-made cocktails ready to enjoy, ice-cold and undiluted, was a game-changer for us. It’s always a delightful surprise when a guest drops by, and we can effortlessly serve them perfect manhattans without breaking a sweat.

The Discovery of Slushy Cocktails

Most freezer-batched cocktails turn out as expected – cold and refreshing. However, our recent experiment with paper planes took an unexpected turn. After pouring the cocktail mixture into a jar and storing it in the freezer, we left it untouched for a couple of days. To our surprise, we discovered that the lower-proof components of the cocktail had frozen, resulting in a unique slushy texture.

The Science Behind Slush Cocktails

For those unfamiliar with the concept, alcohol has a lower freezing point compared to water. This explains why vodka remains liquid in the freezer, while cocktails with lower-proof ingredients like lemon juice and aperol can freeze partially, creating a slushy consistency.

The Perfect Texture

Describing these frozen paper planes as mere “slush” feels like an understatement. Achieving the ideal texture for frozen cocktails can be challenging, especially when using a blender. However, these slushy paper planes boast a thick yet pourable consistency with delicate ice flakes throughout, reminiscent of a popsicle in a glass.

A Summer Delight

With its balanced flavors of bourbon, amaro, Aperol, and lemon, this slushy cocktail is not only visually appealing but also a delight to the taste buds. It’s the perfect way to kick off summer, requiring minimal effort for maximum enjoyment.

Embrace the magic of freezer-batched cocktails and elevate your hosting game effortlessly.
