In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Sandton City has launched the “Words that heal” campaign alongside the Riky Rick Foundation. Originally a call for South Africans to share words of encouragement, this initiative has evolved into a poignant expression of hope. It also serves as an immersive experience center that highlights the impact of creative expression on the mental well-being of young individuals.
A Musical Tribute to Healing
Earlier this year, individuals across South Africa were encouraged to submit voice notes of support for those facing challenges. From a plethora of heartfelt messages received, a selection has been woven into a powerful hip-hop track. This song, aptly named “Words that heal,” features the voice of Riky Rick himself.

This track serves as a tribute to resilience and unity, reminding listeners that no one navigates life’s challenges alone. Available on various platforms including social media and YouTube, the song embodies the core message of the campaign – the profound impact of words in connecting, comforting, and inspiring individuals. It underscores the importance of not just raising awareness but also taking tangible actions to support mental health.
Immerse Yourself in the Movement at Sandton City
From now until November 9th, visitors to Sandton City can explore the “Words that heal” experiential pop-up space located on the top floor next to BOSS. This installation, in collaboration with artist Samurai Farai, showcases limited edition T-shirts, hoodies, and scarves inspired by ‘artivism’ – a fusion of art and activism championed by Riky Rick.
All proceeds from the sale of merchandise will benefit the Riky Rick Foundation, which focuses on enhancing the mental well-being of young individuals and leveraging creativity as a form of healing. For those unable to visit in person, online pledges can be made at rikyrickfoundation.co.za/pledges.
Empowering Voices, Saving Lives
With an average of 23 lives lost to suicide daily in South Africa, initiatives like “Words that heal” aim to change the narrative around mental health. By encouraging open conversations and offering support, these initiatives make it easier for individuals to seek help when needed.
The WhatsApp line (063 980 5816) remains open for anyone wishing to share messages of hope and encouragement. A single kind message has the potential to make a significant difference in someone’s life.
