Rebecca van Bergen, a young entrepreneur, launched Nest in 2006 from her apartment in St. Louis. She was inspired by the potential of craft-based microentrepreneurs to make a positive impact. Nest now partners with global brands like Etsy, Madewell, and Target to promote transparency and economic opportunities for handworkers worldwide.

Under Rebecca’s leadership, Nest has built a network reaching over 250,000 handworkers in 124 countries. Initiatives like the Nest Artisan Guild provide training and resources to artisans, elevating the role of handcraft in creating inclusive economies. In 2017, Nest introduced the Nest Standards for Homes and Small Workshops at the United Nations, aiming to improve the rights and well-being of home-based workers.

Rebecca, with a Master’s in Social Work, is dedicated to creating sustainable pathways for artisans globally. She believes in the power of craft to transform lives and communities. In an interview, she shares her journey, obstacles, milestones, and wisdom gained along the way.

Nest’s evolution includes expanding support for global artisans and launching programs like Makers United for U.S.-based makers. The organization also focuses on climate change, adapting to industry trends and needs. Thoughtfulness and intentionality set Nest apart in the competitive market, celebrating handcraft as a way to preserve tradition and connect humanity.

To stay connected with their audience, Nest listens to artisans, partners, and consumers. Feedback surveys, meetings, and monitoring industry trends help them understand and meet the needs of their community. Success for Nest is defined by impact, stories of transformed lives, and resilient partnerships.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nest pivoted to support artisans producing face masks, demonstrating the importance of being nimble and creative. Rebecca’s daily habits include microtasking for work and self-care, staying grounded and present. Innovation and risk-taking are essential for Nest’s strategy, leaning on mentors and the Board of Directors for guidance.
