Everyone is chasing significance of some kind:

  • Achievement.
  • Recognition.
  • Wealth.
  • Power.
  • Popularity.
  • Success.

But when “the chase” takes center stage, the busyness and focus required can leave us with no energy to offer our most important relationships.

How can we prioritize our marriage and family in light of all the responsibilities that demand our attention each day?

Authors Josh and Christi Straub are answering that question on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly. They believe couples can transform their relationship by becoming the president of their spouse’s “fan club.” That means focusing on what matters, championing their strengths, and encouraging them to become the best version of themselves – that is, who God designed them to be.

They share five decisions that will put your family center stage:

  1. Changing your mindset. 90% of shifting your focus to your marriage and family comes down to renewing your mind.
  2. Talking about your emotions. Emotional intelligence is crucial for putting your family center stage.
  3. Entering your child’s world. Connecting with your children through their hobbies and interests.
  4. Championing your family’s interests and strengths. Celebrate who each member of your family is rather than lamenting who they are not.
  5. Establishing healthy rhythms. Busyness is the enemy of memorable moments with your spouse and family.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

A season of busyness is one thing, but it’s no way to live. We miss out on the richness of the relationships around us when we’re over committed and stressed out. Guard your heart and the heart of your family as well.
