Over the years, loving my wife has most often expressed itself in small ways. Like when our boys were young and full of energy. Some nights I’d come home after a long, busy day at work, and Jean would meet me at the door with Trent and Troy – 5 and 3 years old at the time – and say, “Take them.”

Jean and I were both desperate for a recharge after a long day, but in that moment, there was only room for one of us to take a breather. As often as I could, I tried to express my love to Jean by taking the boys off her hands.

Another way I show Jean love is by showing appreciation for all she does for our family. Jean is a competent and capable woman, but she loves to feel appreciated. A simple comment like, “That was such a great meal tonight. Thanks for putting it together,” means a lot to her.

As much as I’ve learned over the years about loving my wife, I’m always open to learning more. When it comes to loving our lives well, we husbands can always do better. My guest on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly, author Jay Payleitner, is sharing great ideas do doing just that. He’s the author of the book 52 Things Wives Need from Their Husbands: What Husbands Can Do to Build a Stronger Marriage.

Jay encourages husbands not only to express their love in good ways but with good motivation. Guys shouldn’t think they’re sacrificing because they’re watching the children or helping around the house. And they shouldn’t give to get something in return. Good marriages aren’t a 50-50 proposition. They’re 100-100 on each side.
