Quick Overview

Expert’s Evaluation

Our Assessment

Peacemaker season 2 dives headfirst into the action, maintaining the show’s signature crude humor. However, the introduction of new characters and expanded cast means that some fan-favorite characters take a backseat in the latest season.

Peacemaker season 2 finds itself in a unique position within the new DC Universe. Serving as a continuation of Christopher Smith’s story and The 11th Street Kids, it marks the first live-action TV series in this world, following projects like Creature Commandos and Superman under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

So, how does the new season fare? Having watched the first five episodes early, I present a spoiler-free review below.

Season 2 of Peacemaker Dives into the Action

Overall, the initial episodes of Peacemaker season 2 tackle the challenges of the ‘DCEU problem’ with confidence, providing a straightforward explanation while delivering the crude humor that fans enjoy. However, some aspects, particularly character development, seem to have been overlooked in this season.

Character growth remains a strong suit for Christopher Smith (John Cena). Despite evolving since the show’s inception, he remains a flawed yet compelling protagonist. Peacemaker’s vulgar nature and tendency to find himself in absurd situations continue to provide entertainment and sympathy in equal measure.

James Gunn has steered the show away from the Project Butterfly storyline, opting for a new conflict that challenges Chris’s moral compass. Throughout the season, unexpected twists keep viewers on edge, showcasing Gunn’s storytelling prowess. The increased pacing from the start of this season has been a refreshing change, although it has led to some neglect in developing the original group of characters.

Two Season 1 Favorites Take a Backseat

While Steve Agee’s Economos and Jennifer Holland’s Harcourt shine in their roles, the character of Adebayo, portrayed by Danielle Brooks, sees a decline in writing quality. Adebayo’s arc in the first season showcased her internal conflict, but in the latest season, she is relegated to a supporting role, lacking depth and relegated to comic relief.

On the other hand, Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante retains his moments to shine but receives less screen time due to the introduction of new characters. The character’s consistent writing contrasts with Adebayo’s diminished role, although his psychopathic tendencies are missed by some viewers.

The decision to focus on the romance between Chris and Harcourt seems to have impacted the screen time of original characters from the first season. However, the introduction of new characters like Langston Fleury, portrayed by Tim Meadows, injects fresh energy into the show, providing comedic moments and interactions that engage viewers.

Additionally, Frank Grillo’s portrayal of Rick Flag Sr. adds depth to the storyline, elevating the stakes and adding a layer of intensity to the narrative.

Is Peacemaker Season 2 Accessible Without Prior Knowledge?

If you are new to the DC Universe and considering starting with Peacemaker season 2, there is a brief recap of the first season to provide context. However, the emotional impact of certain revelations may be lost without understanding Chris’s journey, particularly his dynamic with his father.

The transition from the DCEU to the DCU should not pose a significant barrier for new viewers. While the events and character arcs from the first season remain relevant, the change in universe settings does not hinder the viewing experience.

Watching Peacemaker season 1 before delving into the latest season is recommended to fully appreciate the nuances of the show. While prior knowledge of The Suicide Squad and Superman is beneficial, it is not essential to follow the storyline in season 2.

Verdict: Should You Tune in to Peacemaker Season 2?

Similar in tone to Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, Peacemaker season 2 offers improved pacing and a more engaging plot compared to its predecessor. While some original characters may receive less focus in this season, the overall entertainment value remains high.

While it is possible to start with season 2, watching Peacemaker season 1 beforehand is recommended for a richer viewing experience. Despite some drawbacks, the show’s blend of humor, action, and drama make it a worthwhile watch.

Will the sidelining of certain characters deter me from continuing to watch the remaining episodes of this exhilarating series? Absolutely not. The show’s unique charm and captivating storytelling make it a must-watch. Don’t miss the premiere of Peacemaker season 2 on HBO and HBO Max on Thursday, August 21, 2025, in the US, and on Sky and Now on Friday, August 22, 2025, with new episodes airing weekly.
