One Way to Tell If You Feel Truly Loved in Your Relationship

The true essence of love can be found in the smallest of moments. It exists in the pauses between conversations, in the split second between reaching out and receiving a response. This phenomenon, known as “repair latency,” plays a crucial role in relationships but often goes unnoticed.

Research has shown that the time it takes for one partner to respond to the other’s bid for connection can have a significant impact on the overall health of the relationship. In a study involving preschool children and their mothers, it was found that children exposed to more stressors experienced longer delays in repairing moments of disconnection with their caregivers.

The speed at which these repairs are made is crucial, as a quick response is seen by the nervous system as a signal of safety. In adult relationships, this translates to the time it takes for a partner to respond to a bid for connection, influencing how secure and loved one feels in the relationship.

Bids, which are attempts to connect with a partner, are the building blocks of intimacy. They can be direct or subtle, but they all serve to strengthen the bond between partners. It’s not just about whether the bid is answered, but how quickly it is responded to that matters.

From a neuroscience perspective, the timing of responses is essential. Humans are biologically wired to signal to others, and timely responses have been shown to promote secure attachment styles. In adult relationships, partners serve as attachment figures, providing reassurance and support. Quick responses signal attunement and create feelings of safety and trust.

On the other hand, delayed responses can create feelings of uncertainty and erode trust over time. Couples who consistently minimize repair latency build a climate of reliability and responsiveness, while those with frequent delays may experience emotional distance and uncertainty in their relationship.

To improve repair latency in a relationship, partners can work on recognizing and responding to bids more effectively. Small gestures such as nods or smiles can go a long way in reducing latency and showing that one is present and attentive. By acknowledging and responding to bids in a timely manner, couples can strengthen their bond and create a sense of security in their relationship.
