In many ways, I am just like the majority of people – constantly seeking ways to improve myself. There are moments of reflection where I realize I could have handled situations better, and I make silent promises to do better next time. However, when similar circumstances arise, I often find myself repeating the same actions. This struggle is not unique to me, as evidenced by the bustling self-help sections in bookstores and the growing literature on intentional personality change.
A few years ago, during a Sabbatical, I delved into the literature on personality change with the intention of merging personal and professional interests. I embarked on a study to explore how individuals can effectively change their behavior for the better. Drawing on principles of acceptance and commitment therapy, I designed a positive psychology intervention aimed at helping individuals align their behaviors with their core values.
In my experiments, I engage individuals in identifying behaviors they wish to engage in more frequently, such as spending time with loved ones or practicing self-care. I then assist them in connecting these desired behaviors to their personal values. By exploring internal and external factors that may hinder these behaviors, we devise strategies to overcome obstacles. Participants track their progress using a software application I developed, allowing them to log their daily behaviors and reflect on their values.
Early on in this study, I observed a surprising outcome – some participants reported feeling more aligned with their values than they initially believed. The intervention not only encouraged them to increase their desired behaviors but also helped them recognize the meaning and purpose already present in their lives. This unexpected discovery highlighted the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness in finding fulfillment.
While the ultimate goal of the project was to help individuals lead more meaningful lives, the journey revealed the power of acknowledging the existing meaning in one’s life. By paying attention to their values and behaviors, individuals can identify areas for improvement while also recognizing their accomplishments.
In conclusion, I believe it is crucial for individuals to reflect on their values, behaviors, and how they intersect. This introspection can lead to personal growth and a deeper sense of fulfillment. Whether striving for improvement or acknowledging current successes, the journey towards self-discovery is a valuable one.
