Mondelēz International Invests in Sustainable Packaging and Agriculture Companies

Mondelēz International, the maker of Oreo cookies, has recently announced its investments in companies focusing on developing compostable packaging and regenerative agriculture. These investments are part of Mondelēz’s Sustainable Futures Impact Investment platform, aimed at supporting scalable solutions that address climate change, community welfare, and circular economy.

Among the companies receiving investments are Pack2Earth, a company working on replacing plastic packaging with bio-based materials; eAgronom, an agricultural technology firm helping farmers transition to more sustainable practices; and Ziro, a fintech startup providing inventory financing to small merchants.

Industry Trends in Sustainability and Innovation

Mondelēz’s commitment to sustainability and innovation stands out in an industry where some competitors are reevaluating their priorities due to declining sales and changing government policies. For instance, General Mills recently closed its venture arm to reassess its growth strategies, while PepsiCo has scaled back some of its climate goals to focus on impactful initiatives that also drive profits.

Mondelēz has also made adjustments to its sustainability and innovation strategies, including changes in its investment approach through the SnackFutures venture arm. The company, along with other major food corporations, decided to withdraw from the U.S. Plastics Pact, a collective effort to improve packaging sustainability.

Mondelēz’s Progress in Sustainability Efforts

In its latest sustainability report, Mondelēz highlighted a 12% reduction in emissions compared to 2018, showcasing advancements in ingredient sourcing and manufacturing practices. Despite these achievements, the company acknowledges challenges in reducing the use of virgin plastic.

Looking ahead, Mondelēz anticipates obstacles in sourcing alternative materials and overcoming technical hurdles to implement innovative solutions. The company remains committed to its sustainability goals but recognizes the complexity of transitioning to more eco-friendly practices in the packaging industry.

With a strong focus on sustainable packaging and regenerative agriculture, Mondelēz International is paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future in the food industry.
