Meta Partners with Midjourney to License AI Image and Video Generation Technology
The Chief AI Officer of Meta, Alexandr Wang, recently announced a partnership with Midjourney to license the startup’s cutting-edge AI image and video generation technology. In a post on Threads, Wang expressed Meta’s commitment to collaborating with Midjourney’s research teams to integrate their technology into future AI models and products.
“To ensure Meta delivers top-notch products to users, we are adopting a comprehensive approach that includes world-class talent, a forward-thinking compute roadmap, and strategic partnerships with industry leaders,” Wang stated.
This collaboration with Midjourney positions Meta to develop competitive products in the realm of AI image and video models, rivaling industry frontrunners like OpenAI’s Sora, Black Forest Lab’s Flux, and Google’s Veo. Meta had previously introduced its AI image generation tool, Imagine, across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Additionally, the company offers an AI video generation tool, Movie Gen, enabling users to create videos based on prompts.
Meta’s agreement with Midjourney marks another strategic move in the AI landscape. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg embarked on a hiring spree to recruit top AI talent, offering lucrative compensation packages exceeding $100 million to some researchers. Moreover, Meta invested $14 billion in Scale AI and acquired the AI voice startup Play AI.
While specific details of the deal with Midjourney remain undisclosed, Midjourney’s CEO, David Holz, affirmed the startup’s independence and lack of external investors. Notably, Midjourney stands out as a leading AI model developer that has never accepted external funding. There were discussions between Meta and Midjourney regarding a potential acquisition at one point, as reported by Upstarts Media.
Established in 2022, Midjourney swiftly emerged as a frontrunner in AI image generation due to its realistic and distinct style. By 2023, the startup was on track to generate $200 million in revenue, offering subscription plans starting at $10 per month. Midjourney also provides premium tiers with enhanced AI image generation capabilities, priced at up to $120 per month. In June, the startup unveiled its inaugural AI video model, V1.
Legal Challenges and Future Prospects
The collaboration between Meta and Midjourney follows legal action against the latter by Disney and Universal, alleging the unauthorized use of copyrighted works to train AI image models. While several AI model developers, including Meta, face similar accusations from copyright holders, recent court rulings have generally favored tech companies in cases related to AI training data.
