Mars to Invest $100 Million in Expanding Chicago Headquarters
Mars, the renowned food manufacturer, has announced plans to invest $100 million in expanding its headquarters in Chicago. This move signifies the company’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the snacking industry, especially after acquiring Pringles maker Kellanova.
By expanding its operations in Chicago, which already houses over 20 of its brands, Mars aims to drive innovation and support long-term growth. This expansion is projected to create 600 new jobs, reinforcing the company’s foothold in the snacking market.
“Chicago has always been a strategic location for our business, and now it serves as the official home for our North America region and Accelerator Division, solidifying our past achievements and future prospects,” stated Andrew Clarke, the global president of Mars Snacking.
With the assistance of tax incentives, Mars Snacking will also establish a new North America regional office hub in Chicago, taking over the former Kellanova global and North America headquarters.
Mars Integrates Kellanova Acquisition
The headquarters expansion aligns with Mars’ integration of its recent $36 billion acquisition of Kellanova, a significant milestone completed in December. This acquisition has positioned Mars as a dominant player in the snacking industry, boasting a diverse portfolio that includes iconic brands like M&M’s, Snickers, Rice Krispies Treats, and Pop-Tarts.
This strategic move has not only expanded Mars’ presence in the salty snacks segment but has also diversified its product offerings beyond confectionery and gums.
Continued Investment in Chicago
This latest headquarters expansion marks Mars’ second major investment in Chicago in recent years. In 2024, the company inaugurated a $42 million research and development facility dedicated to driving snacking innovation.
While Mars is ramping up its corporate operations in Chicago, other players in the food and beverage industry are scaling back to streamline their operations. Companies like Hormel Foods, Treehouse Foods, and Coca-Cola have recently announced plans to reduce their corporate workforce.
Overall, Mars’ significant investment in expanding its headquarters in Chicago underscores its commitment to driving innovation, fostering growth, and solidifying its position as a key player in the competitive snacking market.
