Highlighting women who are making a significant impact with their innovative ideas, I recently had the opportunity to interview Marissa Rodriguez for the Morning Lazziness series.

Marissa Rodriguez was not content with just being a part of the business community. After losing her job a decade ago, she made the bold decision to embark on a path to freedom and success. This leap of faith led her from being a Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Operating Officer for E-Commerce brands to establishing a company that helped its clients generate over $100 million in e-commerce revenue.

Marissa’s journey took a new turn in 2021 when she made a life-changing decision in December. Initially planning a holiday trip to Greece for a friend’s birthday, Marissa fell in love with the slower, more relaxed lifestyle and decided to make Greece her permanent home. Despite being hours apart from her North American clients, Marissa proved that physical distance is no barrier to making a significant impact. By living life on her own terms, she inspires others to do the same.

In 2024, Marissa launched Experience®, an online platform where she shares the insights that shaped her success. Through Experience®, Marissa aims to empower entrepreneurs to break free from conventional paths and attain the freedom that comes with mastering e-commerce. For Marissa, success is not just about numbers; it’s about taking control of your life and destiny. She has cultivated a community of online entrepreneurs who strive for freedom every day.

In our interview, Marissa shares the mindset shifts, bold moves, and lessons that have enabled her to transform ideas into impactful online ventures.

What inspired you to start your business, and what problem were you passionate about solving?

I was driven by the desire to help more entrepreneurs and founders achieve success in e-commerce, particularly direct-to-consumer, so they could experience greater freedom in their lives. After serving as a fractional Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Operating Officer for a decade, I decided to create something that could impact more people and assist them in reaching their goals.

How has your company evolved since its inception, and what key decisions have fueled that growth?

Initially, I believed that providing individuals with my knowledge, tools, and methodology would enable them to leverage that experience in their businesses. However, I soon realized that the gap between information and implementation was too vast for most. Founders and business owners require personalized guidance to implement new systems and processes effectively. This realization led to the concept of mentorship.

What sets your brand apart in today’s competitive market?

The e-commerce landscape is filled with experts who possess domain expertise but lack a comprehensive understanding of the entire ecosystem. Few individuals have both launched and scaled companies while possessing an intimate understanding of all the essential components, including technology, data, marketing, operations, and finances.

What has been your most successful marketing strategy to date, and why do you believe it has been so effective?

I believe that understanding the role of direct response marketing online is crucial. Brands must focus on the value they offer to consumers and position their products as solutions that positively impact their lives. By emphasizing real people and real-life use cases, brands can prompt immediate responses from their audience.

How do you stay connected with your target audience and ensure you understand their needs and behavior?

Fortunately, I have had the privilege of interacting with numerous entrepreneurs and founders in the global e-commerce landscape. While our journeys may vary, we share common goals of achieving greater personal and financial freedom, overcoming the fear of failure, and witnessing our efforts bear fruit.

Can you share a challenge or setback that ultimately led to a breakthrough for your brand?

Every challenge and setback has paved the way for greater opportunities and growth. Losing my job in 2015 forced me to reevaluate my path and led me to pursue a career in e-commerce. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made.

What daily habits or rituals help you stay focused, creative, and grounded as a leader?

Reading has been the most transformative habit I’ve cultivated. I aim to read 10-20 pages daily, which has exposed me to invaluable insights and perspectives that inspire and guide me.

What advice would you offer to someone starting a business in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape?

Take the time to truly understand the online realm and surround yourself with experts and mentors who have achieved what you aspire to. This investment will save you time, money, and mental energy in the long run.
