Tim Cook, the current CEO of Apple, is approaching the age of retirement at 65 years old. Recent reports have hinted at the possibility of Cook stepping down from his position at Apple, possibly even within the year. However, during a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Cook addressed these rumors and firmly stated that he has no plans to leave Apple.
Tim Cook reaffirms his commitment to Apple
In response to speculations about his retirement, Tim Cook emphatically denied these claims and expressed his dedication to staying at Apple. He emphasized his love for the company and his work, stating, “I love what I do deeply. Twenty-eight years ago, I walked into Apple, and I’ve loved every day of it since.” This statement contradicts earlier reports suggesting Cook’s imminent departure.
Despite Cook’s intentions to remain at the helm of Apple, some analysts, like Walter Piecyk from LightShed Partners, believe that a leadership change may be necessary for the company’s future. Piecyk suggests that Apple may need fresh leadership to navigate the increasingly AI-driven landscape and avoid falling behind competitors like Google.
While 2026 was seen as an opportune time for Cook to step down given Apple’s current success, Cook’s recent statements indicate that he has no intention of leaving in the near future.
Succession planning at Apple
Despite Cook’s decision to stay, Apple must start thinking about who will succeed him as CEO. Reports indicate that John Ternus, Apple’s hardware engineering chief, is a frontrunner for the position. Previously, Jeff Williams was considered a top candidate, but he announced his retirement in 2025.
Apple’s leadership team saw changes in 2025 with the departure of key executives like Lisa Jackson and Kate Adams. Rumors of Johny Srouji, Apple’s chip leader, leaving were dispelled by a memo he sent to staff, confirming his commitment to the company.
