L.I.E.R Method
I like to refer to this method as the L-I-E-R method (label, introspect, examine, release). This approach directly addresses the negative emotion and the false beliefs it carries. While the word may not sound appealing, it serves as a helpful mnemonic device to guide us through the process.
1. Label: Acknowledge the presence of the emotion by labeling it in your mind. Use phrases like “fear has arisen” instead of “I’m afraid” to create distance and perspective.
2. Introspect: Take a few deep breaths and focus your attention inward, accepting the emotion without judgment or resistance.
3. Examine: Dive deep into the emotion by exploring its causes, effects, and nature. Challenge any underlying assumptions or beliefs that contribute to the feeling.
4. Release: Allow the emotion to exist without attaching stories or interpretations to it, then let it go naturally.
Through this process, you can gain clarity, composure, self-knowledge, and a sense of liberation from the negative emotion. It’s essential to challenge any core beliefs or assumptions that fuel the emotion, as they may reveal deeper insights into its roots.
