How To Make A Sandbag “Pill” For Weighted Duffel Bags And Backpacks

A few weeks back, I had the idea to create a weighted duffel bag for my home workout routines. I thought it would be a great way to add some variety to my training and challenge my muscles in a different way. While lifting traditional barbells is effective, I wanted to incorporate the instability and shifting weight of a sandbag for a more dynamic workout.

Sandbag training is known for engaging the core and stabilizer muscles, providing a practical strength that goes beyond traditional weightlifting. In fact, a study conducted in 2018 found that sandbag workouts offer a superior metabolic stimulus compared to running on a treadmill, making it a great addition to any fitness routine.

During my research, I came across an article on ITS Tactical that detailed filling a large military duffel bag with rubber mulch. While this was a good starting point, I wanted something more modular that would allow me to easily swap weights between a duffel bag for heavy carries and a backpack for weighted pull-ups. That’s when I discovered the concept of a “pill.”

A sandbag “pill” is a versatile and customizable weight that can be used in various training scenarios. By creating swappable 10-30 lb weights, you can effectively mimic military ruck training and enhance your workout routine. The modular nature of these pills allows for easy customization and adaptability.

To create a sandbag pill, you’ll need a few key materials, including a durable outer shell (such as a military surplus duffel bag or a backpack made from 1000D CORDURA), inner bags (3-mil or 4-mil contractor bags), filler material (options include play sand, pea gravel, or rubber mulch), duct tape, zip ties, a utility knife or scissors, and a scale for accuracy.

When choosing your filler material, consider the pros and cons of each option. Play sand is dense and heavy but can be messy, while pea gravel is less dusty and doesn’t clump when wet. Rubber mulch is clean and lightweight but less dense, requiring more volume to achieve the same weight.

The process of making a sandbag pill is relatively simple but requires attention to detail. Weigh and fill the inner bag, seal it tightly with zip ties, double-bag for extra protection, tape down any protruding parts, and cover the entire pill with overlapping strips of duct tape. This outer shell is crucial for durability and leak prevention.

Once you have created your sandbag pills, you can easily incorporate them into your workout routine by placing them in your duffel bag or backpack. These DIY weights provide a cost-effective alternative to commercial sandbags while offering the same benefits and versatility.

In addition to sandbag training, there are numerous exercise ideas and resources available to help you maximize your workout. Whether you choose to build your own sandbag pills or invest in commercial training sandbags, incorporating this dynamic tool into your routine can lead to significant gains in strength and endurance.

I hope this guide has inspired you to try sandbag training and explore the possibilities of creating your own customized weights. If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Happy lifting!
