Going Natural: Hershey Commits to Removing Artificial Dyes from Snacks by 2027

Hershey recently announced its plan to eliminate artificial dyes from its snacks by the end of 2027, following the footsteps of other food manufacturers making similar pledges. The maker of Jolly Rancher and Dot’s pretzels sees this move as a natural progression in providing consumers with options that align with their lifestyle choices while upholding trust in their products.

This decision from Hershey comes in the wake of other major players in the industry, such as J.M. Smucker, Conagra Brands, General Mills, and Kraft Heinz, committing to removing synthetic colors from their products by 2027. Nestlé USA is also set to rid its food and beverage portfolio of artificial colors by mid-2026.

Responding to Regulatory Pressure

The shift towards eliminating artificial dyes from food products is in response to increased scrutiny from federal and state authorities. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has urged the industry to voluntarily phase out six synthetic dyes by 2027. States like West Virginia and Texas are also taking action by either banning certain additives and colors or requiring warning labels on products containing synthetic dyes.

Hershey acknowledges the challenges posed by the varying state laws on food ingredients, emphasizing the need for a cohesive national standard to ensure food safety, affordability, and quality. The company believes that a unified federal mandate would streamline compliance efforts for manufacturers and alleviate confusion among consumers.

Industry-Wide Movement

With competitors making similar commitments to remove artificial colors, the pressure on companies like Hershey to follow suit has intensified. Despite owning brands like Twizzlers and Jolly Rancher that rely on artificial colors, Hershey aims to transition its portfolio towards more natural alternatives. The majority of Hershey’s products already do not contain synthetic dyes, indicating a proactive approach to meeting consumer preferences.

As consumer demand for clean label products continues to rise, Hershey’s decision to eliminate artificial dyes aligns with the industry’s shift towards transparency and natural ingredients. By staying ahead of regulatory trends and consumer expectations, Hershey is positioning itself as a leader in providing wholesome and trustworthy snacks.

Stay tuned as Hershey and other food manufacturers embark on this journey towards cleaner, more natural ingredients in their products, reflecting a broader commitment to meeting the evolving needs of today’s health-conscious consumers.
