Introducing Google AI Edge Eloquent: A New Offline-First Dictation App for iOS

Google surprised users on Monday with the release of a new dictation app called “Google AI Edge Eloquent” on iOS. This app is designed to compete with other dictation apps like Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow. The app is free to download, and once you download its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) models, you can start dictating on your phone. One of the unique features of this app is that it provides live transcription and filters out filler words like “um” and “ah” when you hit pause.

The app also offers various options below the transcription, such as “Key points,” “Formal,” “Short,” and “Long” to customize the text according to your needs. Additionally, you have the option to turn off cloud mode for local-only processing and import keywords, names, and jargon from your Gmail account. You can even add custom words to the list for a more personalized experience.

Google AI Edge Eloquent keeps track of your transcription history, allowing you to search through previous sessions. It provides insights like words dictated in the last session, words-per-minute speed, and total words spoken during a session.

Although currently only available on iOS, the app’s description hints at an upcoming Android version. Eloquent promises “seamless Android integration” and the ability to set it as the default keyboard for system-wide access. Users can expect features like the floating button for easy access to transcription from anywhere, similar to what Wispr Flow offers on Android.

AI-powered transcription apps are becoming increasingly popular as speech-to-text technology improves. With Google AI Edge Eloquent, Google is entering this space with an experimental app. If successful, we may see enhanced transcription features on Android devices in the future.
