Google Expands AI-Powered Photo Editing in Google Photos

Google is making it easier for users around the world to enhance their photos with the introduction of AI-powered photo editing capabilities. This new feature allows users to make edits to their photos using simple text commands, eliminating the need for complex editing tools.

Initially launched for Pixel 10 users in the U.S. last August, Google has now expanded its natural language-based editing feature to additional countries, including Australia, India, and Japan. This functionality enables users to describe the changes they want to make to their photos in plain language, rather than manually adjusting sliders or using advanced editing software.

When users in these newly supported countries tap the edit option on a photo in Google Photos, they will see a “Help me Edit” box. From there, they can choose from suggested prompts or input their own editing requests using simple language. For example, users can ask the app to “remove the motorcycle in the background,” “reduce background blur,” or even request to “restore an old photo.”

Google’s AI-powered editing feature can handle specific requests such as editing a friend’s pose, removing glasses, or even adjusting closed eyes in a photo where the subject blinked. The technology leverages Google’s Nano Banana image model for photo transformations, with all processing taking place within the app without the need for an internet connection during editing.

This feature is compatible with any Android device with at least 4GB of RAM running Android 8.0 or higher, extending its accessibility beyond Google’s Pixel phones. In addition to geographic expansion, Google has added language support for languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, and Gujarati, allowing millions of users to utilize the tool in their native languages.

Google has also introduced C2PA Content Credentials support in Google Photos for these countries, providing metadata to indicate when an image was created or edited using AI. This helps users understand the origin of AI-generated or AI-edited images as they become more prevalent on social media platforms.

Google’s Continued Integration of AI in Google Photos

This expansion is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to incorporate AI throughout Google Photos. In recent months, the company has expanded AI-powered search capabilities to over 100 countries, supporting more than 17 languages. Additionally, Google has introduced AI templates for converting photos into various artistic styles and recently launched a “Meme me” feature for creating memes using reference templates and personal images.
