While I haven’t been the biggest fan of AI assistants, I find myself using Gemini the most out of all the options available. And now, Google is introducing a major upgrade to Gemini that I’ve been eagerly anticipating.

As a Pixel 10 user, I rely on Gemini quite often. However, there are times when using it can be frustrating due to its limitations. But with the introduction of the new Personal Intelligence update, Google is promising a significant shift in the way AI operates.

The main focus of this upgrade is context. AI technology is often touted as revolutionary, but in reality, it can sometimes feel like a glorified search engine with a fancy interface. Personal Intelligence aims to change that by providing tailored assistance based on individual needs and preferences.

Google describes this update as “connecting the dots”, which is exactly what I’ve been looking for in an AI assistant. Instead of generic responses, Gemini will now be able to provide personalized recommendations and solutions that are relevant to me and my lifestyle.

For instance, if I ask for recommendations in San Francisco, Gemini will consider my personal interests and suggest activities like attending a 49ers game and exploring craft beer bars near my hotel. This level of customization is what sets Personal Intelligence apart from other AI assistants.

Another example provided by Google is the ability to search for specific information, such as the make and model of a vehicle, by scanning through Gmail documents. This feature demonstrates how Gemini can streamline tasks and provide accurate results based on individual data.

While the concept of Personal Intelligence is exciting, there are a few caveats to consider. The update is currently only available in the US, with plans to expand to other countries in the near future. Additionally, access to Personal Intelligence requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, though it will eventually be integrated into the free tier and accessible through the AI Mode tool in search.

Users will need to opt in to activate Personal Intelligence, and it will initially rely on data from Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube History. As the update rolls out globally, it will be interesting to see how Gemini evolves and improves its capabilities beyond the US market.

Overall, the Personal Intelligence update represents a significant advancement in AI technology and positions Gemini as a leading AI assistant. With its enhanced personalized features, Gemini is set to offer a more intuitive and efficient user experience across different platforms and devices. This upgrade not only benefits Android users but also indicates Gemini’s potential to revolutionize AI technology on a broader scale.
