Google has recently rolled out the Android 17 Beta 3 update, bringing a host of enhancements and new features for users. One notable improvement is the reintroduction of the single-tap Wi-Fi toggle for quick and convenient control. This update addresses a design change that had been implemented in previous versions of the operating system.
For a long time, Android users had to navigate a more complicated process to manage their Wi-Fi connections. With Android 12 and subsequent updates, tapping the Wi-Fi tile no longer directly toggled the connection. Instead, it would open a panel with various network options, requiring an extra step to enable or disable Wi-Fi. This change was met with criticism from users, who found the new process inconvenient and inefficient. However, Google has finally listened to feedback and restored the single-tap Wi-Fi toggle function in Android 17 Beta 3.
The return of the single-tap Wi-Fi toggle simplifies the process of managing Wi-Fi connections, making it quicker and more intuitive for users. This change is especially welcome for those who perform this task multiple times a day and found the previous design change cumbersome.
In Android 17 Beta 3, the updated Wi-Fi toggle offers flexible behavior based on the size of the tile. In the 2×1 Quick Settings layout, tapping the left side of the tile instantly toggles Wi-Fi, while tapping the right side displays the connected network and opens a detailed pop-up with additional options. For users utilizing the smaller 1×1 tile, a single tap will directly enable or disable Wi-Fi, similar to older Android versions. A long press on the tile will still bring up the full Internet settings page.
While the redesigned Wi-Fi toggle is currently in beta testing, it is expected to be included in the stable version of the Android 17 operating system. Google is anticipated to release Android 17 by the third quarter of this year, providing all users with access to the improved and simplified Wi-Fi toggle feature.
