In recent days, there have been reports that tapping the search bar on the Pixel Launcher now opens the Google app instead. This change is not a bug, but rather a deliberate decision made by Google, according to 9to5Google. Previously, the search bar at the bottom of the Pixel phone’s homescreen would bring up the Pixel Launcher search. Now, it seems that the Google app is taking over this function.
Unlike on other Android devices, the Pixel Launcher search used to open a unique search overlay that allowed users to search for apps, local files, and contacts. This overlay had a translucent design with the wallpaper visible at the top, along with the prompt “Search web and more.” It also included a row of app suggestions and previous search queries.
The new experience now mirrors what you would find on other Android devices when tapping the Google Search bar homescreen widget. Users are now greeted with a full-screen interface powered by the Google app.
While users can still launch apps, some features like app search and shortcuts for Clock, Contacts, Pixel Tips, Play Store, Settings, and Wallet are no longer available. This change was reportedly announced as part of the November 2025 Feature Drop under the name “An upgraded home screen search bar.”
According to Google, this update allows users to easily access AI Mode, the most powerful AI search experience, directly from the Pixel’s home screen search bar. This enables users to quickly start and resume AI Mode journeys, providing a deeper web search experience. Additionally, more suggested apps will be displayed in the top row, making it seamless for users to continue exploring on their device.
For those who prefer the old Pixel Launcher search experience, it can still be accessed by tapping the bar at the top of the app grid on Pixel 10 and other models. Enabling “Swipe up to start search” from Home settings > Search settings will revert back to the previous search functionality.
In conclusion, the replacement of the Pixel Launcher search with the Google app is an intentional change by Google and not a bug. This update aims to enhance the search experience on Pixel devices and provide users with more convenient access to AI-powered features.
