France Launches Criminal Investigation into Alleged Algorithm Manipulation by Elon Musk’s X
France has initiated a criminal investigation into Elon Musk’s X over suspicions of algorithm manipulation for foreign interference purposes. The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that the national gendarmerie will be conducting the investigation.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated that the investigation will focus on X as a legal entity and involve unidentified individuals as well.
The investigation is examining potential offenses such as the “alteration of the operation” and “fraudulent extraction of data” from an automated data processing system by an organized group. Beccuau mentioned that the decision to launch the investigation followed verifications, input from French researchers, and information provided by various public institutions.
Earlier in February, the Paris prosecutor’s office had opened an initial probe into X after receiving reports from the cybercrime section regarding alleged algorithm manipulation for foreign interference purposes.
These reports were submitted by a cybersecurity manager from a French public institution and a member of parliament, Éric Bothorel. Bothorel expressed satisfaction with the progress of the investigation, emphasizing concerns about biased information and algorithmic manipulation on the X platform.
Bothorel highlighted the importance of addressing these issues to prevent external entities from influencing democratic conversations. He commended the prosecutor’s office for their efforts in investigating cyber threats and ensuring the integrity of online platforms.
Recently, X deactivated its AI chatbot account following the dissemination of antisemitic content. The European Commission has engaged with X regarding this issue, prompting broader discussions about content moderation and algorithmic influence on social media platforms.
As the Paris prosecutor overseeing various cyber-related prosecutions, Beccuau has been involved in cases such as BreachForums and the ongoing investigation into Telegram and its CEO Pavel Durov. Durov was arrested for alleged facilitation of criminal activities on the platform and has since been granted permission to leave France for Dubai.
The investigation into X’s algorithm manipulation reflects France’s commitment to combating online threats and ensuring the transparency of digital platforms. The collaboration between law enforcement, public institutions, and lawmakers underscores the importance of upholding democratic values in the digital age.
