The dream of starting my own fashion magazine was always there, but it wasn’t until I entered a challenging freelance phase that I decided to turn that dream into reality. Struggling to secure consistent work as a freelancer, I saw an opportunity to create my own platform where I could write and create content that resonated with me. Thus, Style26 was born.

Amy: Many fashion publications tend to cater to a specific demographic, often focusing on middle-range or high-end fashion. Amy: One of the biggest hurdles I encountered early in my entrepreneurial journey was imposter syndrome. How do you define personal success, not only as a business owner but as a woman leading a purposeful life?
Amy: For me, personal success is synonymous with fulfillment. I consider myself fortunate to be doing what I love, and that sense of fulfillment outweighs external markers of success like viral fame or financial gains. True success, for me, lies in finding joy and purpose in my work, aligning with my values and passions.

Amy: Early on, I made the mistake of relying too heavily on a single marketing channel, particularly Pinterest. While I initially saw success with Pinterest driving significant traffic to my website, I soon realized the risks of over-reliance on a single platform. A shift in the Pinterest algorithm resulted in a sudden drop in traffic, underscoring the importance of diversification in marketing strategies and business operations. This lesson taught me the significance of building multiple streams of visibility to ensure long-term sustainability.
What advice would you offer to women who are just starting out, especially first-time entrepreneurs feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about their next steps?
Amy: My advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs is to take the leap and start. It’s easy to get caught up in self-doubt and overthinking, but the key is to begin the journey and learn as you go. Waiting for the perfect moment or feeling fully prepared may never come, so embrace the learning process and trust in your abilities to navigate challenges along the way.

I remind myself that my unique perspective and voice are valuable assets, even when addressing familiar topics or themes. Amy: One of the key issues in the fashion industry that resonates with me is the prevalent culture of unpaid or underpaid work, particularly for emerging creatives. I made a commitment when starting Style26 to ensure fair compensation for all contributors, refraining from exploiting individuals’ time and talent for the sake of company growth. By advocating for fair compensation and valuing creative contributions, I hope to challenge the norm of unpaid labor in the industry and create opportunities for diverse voices to thrive.
