Qualcomm is gearing up to launch its highly anticipated Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, which is set to be the company’s most powerful chipset to date. This new chipset will also mark Qualcomm’s first foray into using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process. Despite the excitement surrounding this release, recent rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro may not deliver as expected in terms of CPU performance.

According to a post on Weibo by tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the upcoming chipset may only offer a modest improvement of less than 20% in CPU performance. While there are some performance gains to be had, they may not be as significant as initially hoped. This news comes as a bit of a disappointment, especially considering the buzz surrounding TSMC’s 2nm process and the potential for enhanced performance and efficiency.

However, the post does mention that the real performance gains with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro lie in the Adreno 850 GPU. The GPU has seen improvements in cache size and now supports LPDDR6 RAM, which will not only benefit gaming performance but also enhance AI capabilities.

Looking ahead to Qualcomm’s strategy for 2026, rumors suggest that the company will adopt a dual chipset approach. Instead of a single flagship chipset, Qualcomm will release both a base Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a more powerful Pro version. The Pro variant is rumored to offer slightly better performance and support for LPDDR6 RAM, leading to speculation that it may be reserved for higher-end smartphone models due to rising memory prices.

While the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is said to be compatible with older LPDDR5 RAM, utilizing LPDDR6 RAM may offer a more optimal experience with the chipset. Although an official launch date has yet to be confirmed, reports indicate that the new chipset could make its debut in September.

In conclusion, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro holds promise as Qualcomm’s most advanced chipset, but the performance expectations in the CPU department may not meet all of the initial hype. With improvements in the GPU and support for LPDDR6 RAM, the chipset still offers notable enhancements in key areas. As Qualcomm navigates its dual chipset strategy for 2026, smartphone enthusiasts can look forward to seeing how these developments unfold in the coming months.
