What is a classroom management plan?

Classroom management includes the strategies and techniques that teachers use to create and maintain a warm, inviting, and productive learning environment. This includes having clear expectations, managing student behavior, managing routines, and having a well-organized classroom space.

A lot goes into managing a classroom, so it makes sense to have a plan or an outline of how you will handle various situations and considerations that come up across the school day and year. Some things to consider:

  • How will you organize your space?
  • How will you build positive relationships with students?
  • What are your classroom rules? And who decides them?
  • How will you enforce classroom rules and expectations? What happens when a student breaks those rules?
  • How will you help students complete transitions and perform classroom routines?

A classroom management plan helps to answer all of those questions.

Why is it important to have a classroom management plan?

Teachers make at least 1,500 decisions each day on average. A classroom management plan helps ease that decision-making workload by having a plan for how to address everything from how to turn in papers to what to do when a student breaks a rule. It literally frees up your mind to focus on instruction and on the students in front of you.

Having a plan helps you be consistent. If you’re stuck on what to do when something happens—a student doesn’t turn in an assignment, someone is late to class consistently, a student breaks the rules—you can consult your plan and be consistent and confident with the next steps.

Finally, a clear classroom management plan makes it easier for substitute teachers to step in and fill your shoes when you are out.

Here is what’s included in the classroom management plan bundle:
