Cathay Pacific launches flights to sixth US city

Cathay Pacific debuted its latest route to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Wednesday, marking its sixth nonstop flight to the U.S.

The Oneworld alliance carrier is offering four weekly flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and DFW. Flights depart DFW at 10:55 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and land at HKG at 4:35 a.m. two days later; they depart HKG at 4:05 p.m. and land at DFW at 5:55 p.m. the same day.

Cathay is flying an Airbus A350-1000, which has 46 business-class seats, 32 premium economy seats and 256 economy seats, on the route. The airline has not said whether it will fly its new Aria business-class suite on flights to DFW.

Award seats on Cathay’s new route are available for as few as 47,000 Asia Miles points one-way in economy, according to the airline’s website. Premium economy seats start at 75,000 points one-way, and business-class seats start at 115,000 points one-way. Know, though, that seat availability is limited.

“We are excited to welcome Cathay Pacific and open a new nonstop gateway between Hong Kong and North Texas, enhancing global access and deepening the ties that drive innovation and commerce,” Sean Donohue, the CEO of DFW, said in a statement.

Cathay’s new route, unveiled last September, is a key connection with its partner American Airlines. DFW is American’s largest hub and the second-largest hub in the U.S. after Delta Air Lines’ hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). This hub creates immense connectivity for American’s international partners and has attracted new long-haul flights to DFW on Cathay, Fiji Airways, Qantas and others in recent years.

Cathay said in a statement that travelers on its new DFW flight can “connect to domestic destinations in the U.S., as well as destinations in Central and South America.”

American flew the Dallas-to-Hong Kong route from 2014 through 2020, schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium Diio shows. It canceled the flight during the coronavirus pandemic.

It is unclear how the Trump administration’s trade war with China will affect the new flight. According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, from January through March, international arrivals into the U.S. from Hong Kong by air were up nearly 18% year over year; from China, they were up nearly 134% year over year. That compares to falling numbers for travelers from Canada and Western Europe.

Cathay feeds many of its U.S. flights from Hong Kong with connections from China and Southeast Asia.

In addition to DFW, Cathay serves Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO), according to Cirium.
