Can sound waves destroy prostate cancer?

Dealing with sexual dysfunction, urinary issues, and mobility challenges following a prostate cancer diagnosis is a common concern for many individuals. Fortunately, a cutting-edge procedure known as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) offers a ray of hope in the treatment of prostate cancer.

HIFU utilizes ultrasound technology to target and destroy cancerous cells within the prostate using high-frequency sound waves. This minimally invasive procedure is typically performed under anesthesia, with the primary objective being to preserve healthy tissue surrounding the cancerous area and minimize potential side effects.

“This outpatient procedure usually lasts around an hour without the need for any incisions,” explains Dr. Arpeet Shah, a respected urologist affiliated with Advocate Healthcare. “Patients can typically return home the same day and resume their normal activities within a week, if not sooner.”

Individuals eligible for HIFU treatment are those with localized prostate cancer and no significant spread of the disease to other parts of the body.

“When appropriately selected, focal HIFU therapy can yield similar cancer outcomes to whole-gland treatments,” notes Dr. Shah. “HIFU boasts a 10-fold reduction in the incidence of side effects compared to conventional whole-gland surgical procedures.”

Traditional surgical methods for prostate cancer involve the complete removal of the prostate gland. In cases of aggressive or metastatic cancer, additional treatments like radiation or chemotherapy may be necessary.

Early detection and understanding one’s risk factors are crucial for effective treatment. The risk of prostate cancer varies among individuals based on factors such as age, race/ethnicity, family history, and lifestyle choices. Prostate cancer screenings are recommended for men aged 55 to 69 who are at average risk for the disease.
