Eliminating Artificial Colors: Campbell’s Company Takes a Healthier Approach

The Campbell’s Company has announced its plan to completely remove artificial colors from its food and beverage products by next August. This decision will impact only a limited number of brands, as the majority already use natural dyes. In the future, Campbell’s will be using annatto and purple carrot juice concentrate for products like Lance crackers and V8 Splash. Additionally, artificial colors will be eliminated from snack and cookie brands such as Jay’s, Archway, and Stella D’oro.

This move by Campbell’s aligns with the trend in the food industry, as many companies are shifting towards using natural ingredients. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been urging companies to voluntarily remove synthetic dyes by 2027. While Kennedy doesn’t have the authority to enforce these changes, most food manufacturers, including Campbell’s, have agreed to make the switch.

In a statement, Campbell’s mentioned that they have been keeping a close eye on the changing regulatory landscape and consumer preferences. They have noticed a growing demand for healthier foods with simpler ingredients, prompting them to make the transition away from synthetic dyes. Campbell’s emphasized that this change not only reflects consumer preferences but also their commitment to providing high-quality, wholesome food.

Some of Campbell’s brands have already been using natural colors for many years. For example, Goldfish crackers, one of their flagship products, have been using colors derived from plants for over 15 years. The red color in Goldfish crackers comes from a blend of beet juice concentrate and paprika extracted from sweet red peppers.

Campbell’s decision to eliminate artificial colors from its products is in line with the company’s dedication to meeting consumer demands for healthier and more natural food options. By making this change, Campbell’s is not only keeping up with industry trends but also staying true to its commitment to providing great-tasting, wholesome food to its customers.
