Enhance Your Baking Experience with Brown Butter Cookies

One of the best ways to elevate your baking game is by incorporating brown butter into your recipes. The rich, nutty flavor that browned butter adds can take your cookies to a whole new level. If you’re looking to create the perfect batch of brown butter cookies, follow these simple steps to achieve delicious results.

Brown the Butter:

Start by browning your butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat. As the butter melts, it will foam and eventually turn a clear golden color with toasted speckles. Once you see these speckles, remove the pan from the heat. The residual heat will continue to toast the butter to a medium brown color. Transfer the browned butter to a bowl, add water, and place it in the freezer to chill.

Chill the Browned Butter:

To speed up the chilling process, freeze the butter for 30 minutes, then stir it and return it to the freezer for another 15 to 30 minutes until it is firm throughout. Cut the chilled butter into chunks for use in the cookie dough.

Prepare the Cookie Dough:

If using a food processor, combine the dry ingredients and pulse to blend. Add the brown butter chunks and cream cheese, then mix until the dough comes together. Add the egg and vanilla, blending until smooth. For those using an electric mixer, whisk the dry ingredients and beat the cream cheese, brown butter, and sugar until fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla, and flour, mixing until combined.

Bake the Cookies:

Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper and roll the cookie dough into balls. Coat them in a cinnamon sugar mixture, flatten slightly, and bake for 10 to 11 minutes. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet before transferring them to a rack.

Storage:

These brown butter cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Tips:

  • Use regular butter for the best results, but adjust the water content if using higher butterfat butter.
  • Adding water back to the browned butter ensures a tender texture in the cookies.
