Google is introducing new security features for Android 16, including Identity Check and Advanced Protection. These features aim to safeguard smartphone users from AI-driven attacks, data breaches, and emerging threats.
The official release of Android 16 is scheduled for December 2025, with beta users already able to test the new functions.
Identity Check is a feature that automatically verifies the user’s location to ensure it is a trusted environment. If the device is accessed from an unfamiliar location, additional biometric confirmation is required for security-sensitive actions like changing passwords or accessing sensitive data, even if the phone is unlocked. This measure is designed to thwart attacks where third parties may observe the PIN input or briefly gain access to the device, enabling them to compromise accounts or disable security features.
Users have the option to designate trusted locations where additional authentication is not needed, such as their home. However, Google advises against setting trusted locations in public areas for security reasons.
Advanced Protection encompasses several security measures, including real-time scanning of all installed apps, protection against spyware and malicious apps, warnings about suspicious links in browsers and messaging apps, and enhanced security for Google Messages and phone applications. Users can also activate Account Protection to safeguard their Google account against targeted online attacks.
These new features come at a crucial time, coinciding with Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which highlights the growing threats of AI-powered phishing emails and deepfake attacks. Recent vulnerabilities like pixnapping, which allows hackers to steal 2FA codes, underscore the risks posed by malicious apps that can capture screenshots of sensitive information without the user’s knowledge.
With Android 16, the focus shifts from reactive security updates to proactive, intelligent defense mechanisms that factor in human behavior and respond automatically to unusual activities. The upcoming Android 16 QPR2 updates will make these security functions available to all users, with rollout expected to commence in December 2025. Users who have access through beta versions or Play Services updates can activate the features immediately.
To maximize protection, Google recommends enabling these features in the device settings under “Security and privacy” after the update.
